The color is extremely good, even in 3D

Moreover, this BenQ W1070 has built-in speakers that are plug-and-play ready. You only need the power cord and the video source connection.

TYPES OF PROJECTOR’S DISPLAY TECHNOLOGY

DLP – Digital Light Processing
DLP technology uses a chip that is composed of up to 2 million tiny mirrors, no wider than ⅕ the width of your hair. Each of the chips in the mirror adjusts independently and moves either toward or away from the light source to create a light or dark pixel.

This kind of projector requires less maintenance. It has a filter-free sealed chip design in which dust cannot settle on the chip. When this chip is surrounded by dust, there will be a formation of the spot in the image. Hence, this DLP projector is immune to color decay, but avoid having a DLP projector with slower color wheels. For this slow color, wheels will give off a rainbow effect.

The chip is the only one that is being sealed, other components are not. In line with that, dust can settle on the color wheel that affects the image quality. Most DLP projectors are suitable for a smaller environment because of the compatibility issue with zoom lenses or lens shift functions.

LCD – Liquid Crystal Display
LCD projector uses a liquid crystal that creates an image. Most LCD projectors use 3 LCD technology in which the image is created in a multistep process that begins with the light source providing a beam of white light.

The pixels in this LCD projector can burn out and dust particles can distort the quality of the image. LCD projectors are compatible with zoom lenses and lens shifts, making it more suitable for larger rooms or any room with high ambient light.

LED – Light Emitting Diode
LED projectors use a process called electroluminescence to produce light. Instead of using a bulb, these projectors have arrays of red, green and blue LEDs. These three mixed together to generate an accurate color of white light.

There will be a reduction in maintenance and operating costs since the LEDs used in a LED projector needs no warm-up or cool-down. Hence, it is energy-efficient compared to the other traditional light sources and also much quieter.

LCoS – Liquid Crystal on Silicon
LCoS is the hybrid version of LCD and DLP in which it uses liquid crystal chips with a mirrored backing. In other words, LCoS projectors are reflective just like DLP projectors and use an LCD panel where the light passes through from each of the pixels.

These LCoS projectors produce a very smooth and accurate image without suffering from screen-door effect or rainbow effect.  Also, it offers an accurate color reproduction. With the combination of the two display technologies, this LCoS projector is quite expensive and a bit heavy.

Display Technology

Commonly used:
DLP Best for art galleries, museums, restaurants, and schools.
LCD – Best for any room with high ambient light such as churches, large boardroom, auditoriums.
LED – Best for areas with controlled lighting.
LCoS – Best for auditoriums, museums, and medical education.

GUIDELINES

A home theater projector will be called the right one if its features and specifications meet the guidelines that will be mentioned. And after knowing these guidelines, you must be able to assess and question yourself in order for you to acquire the best.

Contrast Ratio
Contrast Ratio is the difference between the lightness and the darkness of a screen which is expressed through numbers. For home theater, contrast is the most important aspect because it is responsible for giving you cinematic content. When dark prevails, the whites would be much brighter next to those darks. Thus, a high contrast ratio means that you will be able to see a sharp and crystal clear detail in the projected image.

Light Output
The Light output or brightness refers to your perception, such that it means how bright the image looks. The wide range of brightness of projectors is measured in Lumens. This brightness is divided into two. When looking for a projector, you must be able to look for two Lumens specifications: the color brightness and the white brightness. If there will only be one Lumen rating stated, it is only referring to the white brightness of the projector.

White Brightness – indicates the total amount of white light emitted by the projector.
Color Brightness – measures how bright the projected primary colors will be that is the Red, Blue, and Yellow.

Lumens Range

Recommendation:
Under 1000 Lumens
-This low light output projector must be used in a dark room.
-They are better on small screens.
-Not expensive

1000 to 2000 Lumens
-Needs to be in dimly lit rooms.
-Suitable for small to the average-sized screen.

2000 to 3000 Lumens
-More flexible with lighting.
-Can be placed in a room with an ambient lighting.
-Suitable for any screen sizes.

Above 3000 Lumens
-Most expensive and very bright.
-Suitable for rooms with adequate lighting.
-Recommended for large rooms or halls.
-When used in dark rooms, the screen is too bright to look at.

Moreover, the reflected image should be bright enough to be sharp and clear. Having a more light output projector does not necessarily mean that it is a good thing. You must also consider the place where you are going to use the projector. As you can see in the table above, it tells the amount of lighting needed and the size of the room and screen in every Lumen range. Below are some reminders if ever you happen not fully visualize or understand the table above.

Reminders:

–  For home theater where there is a minimum ambient light, you will need a minimum of 1500 Lumens.

–  For classrooms and conference rooms, 2500 Lumens are recommended.

–  For large areas like an auditorium or lecture halls, you will need more Lumens.

Resolution

The resolution is the total number of pixels projected. It is measured from side to side and top to bottom. This will determine how much detailed and crisper the images will appear.

Home Theater Formats

Aspect Ratio

Recommendations:
Standard
4:3
For classic films or DVD-based television series

Widescreen
16:9
For HDTV, widescreen DVD and Blu-ray formats

Cinemascope
2.25:1
2.4:1
For a theater-like experience.

Resolution

1280 x 720 – Provides good DVD and Blu-ray video quality.

1280 x 768 – Works well with 16:9 aspect ratio video.

1920 x 1080 – The best resolution for high definition formats.

Wired or Wireless

A wired projector uses a cable or wire to be connected to your computer so that images will be projected after such connections. On the other hand, a wireless projector allows you to project images without using a cable.

Connections
Projector alone can’t give you the cinema-like atmosphere. You need to connect it to your computer or your smart tv. There are many types of projector connections and each of them varies if they are cross or backward compatible using an adapter.

1.   USB Plug in Play – projects images in seconds.

2.   HDMI – stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface. It allows digital audio through the same cable.

Throw Distance and Positioning

The throw distance of a projector is the distance between the projector and the image on the screen projected or thrown by the projector. Throw distance must be considered so that there will be adjustments and flexibility in the positioning and the image’s size.

Ultra-Short Throw: This kind of throw result is seen from projectors installed nearer to the wall like using a table.

Short Throw: It provides large images in which it is the throw result of a projector installed on the wall or on the ceiling closer to the wall.

Long Throw: It provides very large images. It is the throw result of a projector installed in the center of the ceiling in a large room.

Image Position and Adjustment

A projector should have a vertical and horizontal image correction. This will allow you to adjust and align the skewed image being projected so that it will display flat on the screen or wall.

Price

Home theater projectors are quite expensive. With that, you should be able to figure out your budget and how much higher you might go.

CONCLUSION

Now that you already know the key features that the best home theater should possess, you must be able to answer these important questions: Which aspect ratio I really want? How bright should it be? How much contrast do I need? What resolution is best for me? How much is it? How far would I adjust my budget range?

Getting rid the confusion is a bit hard but if you answer the questions stated above, then you will know what are the specifications you needed the most to acquire a cinematic-like home theater. Since we only gave you the five best home theater projector in the market, it will be easy for you to identify the best and the right projector for your home theater.
